Reflection and Goal Setting

My children came back home with their mid-term reports. When I was reading the reports, a section on the reports caught my attention: “Reflection and Goal Setting”. Some questions were listed:

What did I enjoy doing the most? What have I found difficult?

What have I learned?

What can I do well?

What would I like to do better?

How can I achieve this?

Wow, I was half amazed and half thrilled. I am amazed because the kids were really encouraged to reflect what they have learned and set their own goals based on their learning experiences. On the other hand, I am thrilled that these techniques practiced in the school are equally important for ourselves.

Evaluation and Reflection

It is important to know where we are right now and how satisfied we are at the moment. This is the foundation for us to decide what we want in the future and how we can get there.

Goals

Dreams and goals are what we want, not what we wanted in the past, not what we think we can get. They are what we want, born from our hearts and our minds. This can not be told by anybody else, or the society itself. The goals are unique because we are unique. The goals should be based on who we are and what we are talented at.

Setting the Goals

  • The goals have to be specific. What do we want exactly?
  • The goals have to be measurable. Each part of the goals have to be easy to be measured so we will know if we have achieve it or not.
  • The goals have to be realistic. They have to be practical, real and doable.

Have you heard of the saying “the unexamined life is not worth living.”? Reflection gives us the chance to look at what we have done objectively; goal setting enables us to go higher to a next level.

However, with the daily routines, it is so easy to forget to set time to reflect and set goals. I myself haven’t done this for a while. Tonight I set the first goal is to become more disciplined at reflection and goal setting. How about you?
